We’re delighted to be able to say that this autumn we will be running an Introduction to Old Testament Hebrew module, something we haven’t been able to do for several years. We’re also thrilled to have Dr Paul Lawrence join our cohort of Adjunct Lecturers to teach this module.
Dr. Paul Lawrence studied Hebrew and Akkadian at the University of Liverpool under Prof. Alan Millard. He has worked with the Bible Society in Turkey on a new translation of the Old Testament into Turkish, and with SIL Global on several Bible translations into Turkic, Caucasian and Iranian languages. He maintains an active interest in Biblical archaeology and is the author of several books including The Lion Atlas of Bible History. He lives in Liverpool with his wife Jane. They have three married children and one granddaughter.
If you teach or preach God’s Word, you really ought to have at least a basic grasp of the original languages in which it was written.
Professor Gordon Wenham says, “Learning Hebrew is not simply an academic exercise; it is a means of hearing the Old Testament more clearly.” His argument is that direct engagement with the Hebrew text gives confidence in interpretation that cannot be obtained solely through translations.
EBC’s Chairman of Trustees, Prof Steve Taylor, has been studying Hebrew with Dr Lawrence and says, “I have been studying Hebrew for the past few years under the excellent guidance and supervision of Dr Paul Lawrence who is a renowned expert in Biblical Hebrew and a world authority on the Old Testament. I can thoroughly commend Dr Lawrence’s gracious and careful manner of teaching beginners (like myself) who have no previous experience in Hebrew.”
This module will run over 10 Tuesday evenings (7.15 – 9.15) through the autumn, beginning on 29th September, and is open to ANYONE who would like to study with us. All classes are held over zoom so wherever you are you can join in.
