Mark’s Gospel

Mark’s Gospel is the shortest of the Gospels. Most of the material in Mark is also found in Matthew and Luke and for this reason Mark’s account has tended to be neglected. This is a pity because there is a vividness that is unique to Mark. One of Mark’s favourite words is the Greek word euthus or eutheos.  In the AV and ESV it is translated as immediately or straightway or anon. This doesn’t come out so clearly in the NIV where it is translated by various expressions, such as at once or without delay.  It is, however, very obvious in the Greek text.   Altogether Mark uses this word more than 40 times – more than in all the rest of the New Testament.  A number of stories are told in such vivid detail that they obviously reflect first-hand accounts of the events they describe. Both of these characteristics, the use of the word euthus and the vivid detail with which Mark tells his story, make Mark’s Gospel a very gripping story.   It seems to move at great speed towards a certain goal.   When you start to read you want to keep on reading.

Over 10 Tuesday mornings, Pastor Kieran Banks will open up this dramatic and gripping gospel for you and, inevitably, draw you closer to Christ.

The course will be held on Tuesday mornings between 9.30 and 10.30 over zoom, starting on Tuesday 1st October 2024.  Specific dates for the whole course will be provided.

The cost for the course is £75 if you just want to audit the module and £100 if you want to complete an assessment and gain study credits.  Fees must be paid  in advance and registration, which can be done here, is essential.

Autumn Evening Classes at EBC

This autumn we are running a choice of zoom classes on Monday and Tuesday evenings so, without even leaving your own home, you can be part of and benefit from some inspirational Bible ministry or training.  These classes are open EVERYONE and ANYONE and there is a simple registration process.

Mondays (7.00 – 9.00pm)

Option A: Bible Overview

  • A year long course taking you through every book of the Bible, helping you to see its main theme, it’s key verse(s) and its structure, and setting each individual book in the unfolding revelation of God’s plan and purpose.  More info here.

Option B: Romans

  • This 10 week evening class would make a great Bible study session which would hugely benefit anyone.  We will open up Paul’s ‘magnus opus’ in such a way as to teach your mind, touch your heart and target your will. More info here.

Tuesdays (7.00 – 9.00pm)

Option A: Hermeneutics (Bible Interpretation)

  • This course would be of immense value, not only to those who are preparing to teach or preach God’s Word but, indeed, to all believers who want to get more out of their Bibles. It is designed to give you the necessary skills to correctly apply the principles of interpretation to any part of Scripture, both in your own reading of the text and also in preparation for any ministry.  Held fortnightly throughout the College year.  More info here.

Option B: Homiletics (Expository Preaching)

  • This course, again held fortnightly throughout the College year, is designed to equip you to take any passage of Scripture and prepare and deliver a Bible study or sermon, unpacking and applying that passage.  To do this course, students are ordinarily expected to have previously completed the Hermeneutics module. More info here.

Please note: the two Tuesday evening classes will run on alternative weeks.

Ecclesiology (The Doctrine of the Church)

Dr Sinclair Ferguson has said, ““It is simply not possible to live a God-centred, Christ-centred, Spirit-led life unless my life is also Church-centred.”

In this 10 week module, led by EBC’s Principal, Rev John Brand, we will consider the breadth of the biblical teaching on the Church, giving consideration to the identity, purpose, structure, leadership, discipline and membership of the Church.

The course will be held on Wednesday afternoons between 2 and 4pm over zoom.  The course starts on Wednesday 2nd October 2024 and specific dates for the whole course will be provided.

The cost for the course is £150 if you just want to audit the module and £200 if you want to complete an assessment and gain study credits.  Fees must be paid  in advance and registration, which can be done here, is essential.

Another New Adjunct Lecturer

It’s a joy to have Mr Dieter Schneider on board as a new Adjunct Lecturer. Dieter will be teaching Church History this College year.

Dieter was raised in Germany, but has lived in England and Scotland for most of his life.  In his younger years he worked in a bank and an international language school. During his London days Dieter worked for some five years with a Christian charity and inner-city church, focusing on preaching, door-to-door / hospital / prison visiting, youth work and helping the homeless.

Subsequently, he studied theology both in England and Scotland, before joining the teaching profession. Over the years, Dieter has been involved in church missions and preaching. In his free time, Dieter enjoys reading, travelling, politics, walking, chess and socialising with family and friends.

The Psalms

We should be so grateful to God for the great hymn writers who have enriched and stimulated our worship of God down through the years; people like Isaac Watts, Charles and John Wesley, Keith Getty, Christopher Idle and Stuart Townend.   They enable us to say what we feel but don’t have the verbal capacity to express.  So it is with the Psalms, only so much more so because they are “breathed out by God” and given to us by God to help us worship him.

In this course, EBC’s Principal, Rev John Brand will introduce you to and guide you through the largest book of the Bible over 10 Tuesday mornings between 11.00am and 1.00pm over zoom.  The course starts on Tuesday 31st October 2024 and specific dates for the whole course will be provided.

The cost for the course is £150 if you just want to audit the module and £200 if you want to complete an assessment and gain study credits.  Fees must be paid  in advance and registration, which can be done here, is essential.

Welcome to New Adjunct Lecturer

We’re delighted to welcome Grant Earley to our growing team of Adjunct Lecturers.

Now resident in UK, Grant was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. He studied at the Baptist Theological College of Southern Africa, where he attained a degree in Biblical Studies and an Honours Degree in Theology. Grant is currently enrolled at the University of Glasgow, pursuing a research Master of Theology with a focus on the retrieval of premodern hermeneutics.

Grant has served in a wide range of ministry contexts in both South Africa and the UK. In South Africa, he founded The City Institute, which served as a layperson training centre in his local church. The goal of the Institute was to equip and mature people with the Bible. During this time, he taught hundreds of students in courses ranging from apologetics to hermeneutics to systematic theology.

Grant has recently been invited to join the leadership team of Beacon Community Church in Camberley, Surrey, where he will be focusing on the group ministry and new believers.

Grant wrote and will be teaching our new module on Biblical Theology in the autumn term.

Overview of Biblical Theology

This is a completely new module at EBC and, we believe, one of the most important we run.  It has been put together, and will be taught, by Grant Earley, the latest addition to our cohort of Adjunct Lecturers and someone with considerable experience in this field.  Details of the course’s content can be found here.

EBC’s Principal, John Brand, says, “I wish this sort of course had been available to me when I started out in ministry and I may well join this class and would encourage you to do so as well!”

The course will run on Monday mornings between 11.00am and 1.00pm over zoom.  The course starts on Monday 30th September 2024 and specific dates for the whole course will be provided.

The cost for the course is £150 if you just want to audit the module and £200 if you want to complete an assessment and gain study credits.  Fees must be paid  in advance and registration, which can be done here, is essential.

Servant Leadership

Leadership in the Church and in Christian life in general is absolutely critical, but more precisely the right type of leadership – Christlike, servant leadership.

In this 10 week course Dr Adrian Holdsworth will help you explore the biblical material on roles and purposes of leadership in the local church, on leading and following, the qualifications for eldership and practical tasks of mentoring & leadership.

The course will run on Wednesday mornings between 9.30 and 10.30am over zoom.  The course starts on Wednesday 3rd October 2024 and specific dates for the whole course will be provided.

The cost for the course is £75 if you just want to audit the module and £100 if you want to complete an assessment and gain study credits.  Fees must be paid  in advance and registration, which can be done here, is essential.

Expository Preaching (Homiletics)

In this 20 week course which runs fortnightly through the College year, EBC’s Principal, Pastor John Brand, will guide you through the process of preparing to preach or teach a message based on a passage of Scripture. John has been preaching for 50 years and for about half of that time has also been involved in training preachers in UK, Sudan, South Sudan and Poland.  He can’t make anyone a preacher, but with God’s help he make you a better preacher and further develop a gift that God has given you.

The course will run on Tuesday evenings between 7 and 9pm over zoom, and as well as interactive classroom sessions there will be opportunities for one to one mentoring by John.

The course starts on Tuesday 1st October 2024 and specific dates for the whole course will be provided.

The cost for the course is £400 and fees must be paid at least one term in advance. Registration is essential and can be done here.
