Galatians

Here are details of another of our new virtual classrooms which are running this autumn and which are open to anyone.  (You can find more information about our virtual classrooms here.)

The letter to the Galatians has been referred to as the “Magna Carta of Christian liberty”. It addresses the issue of false gospels, specifically, the heretical claim by the “Judaizers” that works of the Law, such as circumcision, are essential for Gentiles (non-Jewish people) before they can receive salvation as Christians.

Paul had once delivered the Gospel of grace to the Galatians, which they so wonderfully believed. Now, in his letter to them, he must chastise them for so readily believing “another gospel”. He will go on to expose and dismantle this false gospel by appealing to both Old Covenant promises of salvation and their fulfilment through the New Covenant in Christ Jesus. This pharisaic infiltration by the Judaizers has also generated contentions and bad fruit between the Galatian saints. Paul, therefore, exhorts them to reject the false teaching, to walk in the Spirit and put away the desires of the flesh so that they may produce good fruit.

Galatians is a warning and an encouragement to the Church in every generation, as it deals with issues that have plagued the Christian faith since it began.

Scottish Church History

Today, we are posting details about the first of five virtual classrooms we are running this autumn. You can find more information about our virtual classrooms here.

“The Faith of the Gospel on Fire” is a great way of describing how the Reformation transformed Scotland. What made believers ready to sacrifice everything, even their lives, rather than disobey Christ in any way?

This course focuses on Scotland’s long reformation, covering the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It seeks to understand the significance of the events that took place as well as the people and principles involved. We trace the connection between the first Reformation of 1560 and the Second Reformation period associated with the National Covenant of 1638. Tracking the tumultuous twists and turns of different events, kings can be challenging. We will seek not only to understand these but also the spiritual impact behind the events.

Our hope is that you will not only discover more about this period but that you will see how its legacy can enrich us today. “Come and see the works of God” (Psalm 66:5)

Course dates:

Tuesdays October 6, 13, 20, 27; November 10, 17, 24; December 1, 8

bible in a day Online Seminar

Saturday 3rd October. 9.00am – 5.00pm (in four 1.5 hour online sessions

These six hours will give you a bigger Bible…

(Rev Dr Sandy Roger)
  • Do you know your Jeremiah from your Jeroboam; your Elisha from your Elijah?
  • Do you know when the Exodus was, or the Exile?
  • Where were JerusalemJericho and Joppa?
  • Who were Habakkuk and Hezekiah?
  • Did you know that Adam and Noah were alive at the same time
  • or what was the last letter Paul wrote?

For many – perhaps most – Christians, vast sections of the Bible are either ‘no go’ or at least ‘not gone’ areas. They are strangers to much of God’s exciting and important revelation to us.

The Bible in a Day is designed to change all that.

  • We will make you feel at home in the worlds of the Old and New Testaments and help you join up all the pieces in a clear and helpful way.
  • We’ll give you the what, where, when, who and why of all the major events and  sections of the Bible.

EBC Principal John Brand has presented this material in many local churches around the UK and is now presenting it online in a special one day seminar.

Presented over four 1.5 hour sessions on Saturday 3rd October, with opportunities for questions and interaction, this is a great way to really get to know your Bible – your whole Bible.

The cost is just £40 and includes a book containing all the taught material which will be mailed out afterwards

Pre-registration is essential and can be done here.

We all felt that John was extremely well at explaining the Bible and came across in an enthralling manner, keeping our interest at all times.

Virtual Classrooms @ EBC

Having to move all our classes online last term because of the current pandemic has opened up for us new possibilities for making our teaching available to even more people. We trialled a few virtual classrooms in the summer term and, based on the very positive experience and feedback, we are going to continue to use this vehicle for ‘equipping God’s people for God’s purposes’.

When our new session starts at the end of September, several of our modules will be accessible via zoom so that anyone can join a class and study along with our Diploma students. You can, if you want, simply ‘attend’ the class and benefit from the teaching and discussion; or you can do the appropriate reading and study that goes with the teaching, complete the appropriate assignments, and earn study credits. It’s entirely up to you.

From tomorrow we will start posting details of the virtual classrooms that will be running this autumn, so make sure you check back here to find out what the options are.

For each subject, would be participants will need to pre-register and we will also be looking for a donation to cover the costs.

Patterns of Evidence: Exodus

Caroline and I spent a couple of hours recently watching this stunning and compelling documentary and highly recommend it.

Tim Mahoney, an independent film maker and producer, sets out to examine why, by and large, archaeologists, scientists and even religious leaders are convinced that the Exodus, as recorded in Scripture, didn’t happen; alleging that there is simply no evidence for it. Mahoney examines the biblical detail and, using a scientific approach to consider the evidence, discovers that the evidence is there and is compelling.

Mahoney interviews a wide range of ‘experts’ and what is so clearly demonstrated is that they take a very unscientific, even, at times, illogical approach. The fact is that they don’t see what they don’t want to see;, whereas if you approach the subject with an open mind and are willing to follow the evidence, the biblical account is strongly corroborated by the evidence.

Everything about this film is excellent – the cinematography, the graphics, the scope of research and the conclusion.

The Class of 2020

Meet – and pray for – Jamie, another of our latest cohort of Graduates.

Because of the current lockdown restrictions we are obviously unable to publicly celebrate the achievements of our 2020 Graduates – at least for the time being. We are hopeful of being able to do so later in the year. But, in the meantime, we are featuring our 7 graduates of 2020 and commending them to your prayers. Perhaps, as you read their stories, you could see yourself as an EBC Graduate in 2021 or 2022! Why not get in touch with us and explore possibilities.

Jamie Gallacher

Jamie has also graduated with a Licentiate in Theology (with Distinction), having successfully completed our new Advanced Ministry Apprenticeship Programme (AMAP). This is a 9 month vocational training programme, conducted in diverse ministry settings under the leadership of EBC and external mentors.  (More details here)

Jamie says, “

“I completed the AMAP over 2 years whilst participating in a Pastor in Training role. The classroom environment was a very good supplement to my ‘on the ground’ training in the church. It gave me time for reflection on my experiences, as well as introducing new ideas for me to take back to my placement church and implement.

“One of the greatest benefits was the range of experiences that would be evident in every classroom. There were the lecturers drawing from many years of service, sometimes decades, in their field; and my fellow students who were finding some of the same challenges and having encouraging feedback. This made for a vibrant classroom environment leading to many helpful and challenging conversations”

Jamie’s prayer for himself – and you might like to join him – is the words of Colossians 1:10 – “…that I may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God”

Gillian Glancy

Gillian has also graduated with a Licentiate in Theology (with Merit), having successfully completed our new Advanced Ministry Apprenticeship Programme (AMAP). This is a 9 month vocational training programme, conducted in diverse ministry settings under the leadership of EBC and external mentors.  (More details here)

Gillian writes, “My AMAP course experience at EBC this past year has helped me for the first time to have the confidence in prayerfully reading the Bible on my own, knowing that the Holy Spirit will help my understanding of God’s Word for his glory and my growing in Christ-likeness.

“I have an increased hunger for knowing God’s Word in relation to decision making and pointing others to Jesus. God has grown me in my reverence for Him – I fear Him more than ever, whilst more able and willing to run into his arms because His mercies are new every day. In the words of the song, “our sins they are many, His mercy is more”.

“What I love and think about often is God’s gentleness in teaching me which, in turn, God uses to teach me how to parent my autistic children, in a safe and God honouring way.

“My growing in understanding of God’s Word has better equipped me in dealing with conflict within relationships.

“God has shown me a deeper understanding of what it means to deny self and put the interests of others above my own, for His glory and the unity of the Body of Christ.

“My favourite classes this year were Knowing Mission and Spiritual Formation – I have grown in my relationship with the Lord in the area of repentance and identity in Christ which have both filled me with joy and a new awareness of purpose. I have never felt so excited about God’s rescue plan for all nations, and this has resulted in a renewed compassion for the lost as well as greater longing to be home with Jesus.”

Joshua Truesdale (from Northern Ireland)

Joshua has graduated with a Licentiate in Theology (with Distinction), having successfully completed our new Advanced Ministry Apprenticeship Programme (AMAP). This is a 9 month vocational training programme, conducted in diverse ministry settings under the leadership of EBC and external mentors.  (More details here)

“My placements in Rathfriland Baptist (NI) and Falkirk Free Church of Scotland were of great benefit to me. I gained experience in areas I hadn’t yet had, confidence in both my giftings and assurance of my calling, and encouragement from the people I ministered with. It all suddenly came to an abrupt pause and end, but it was a very worthwhile year. I appreciate your prayers as I seek God’s next step for my life. I have some ‘draft ideas’ as to what that may be, but I’m sure we’ve all learned over recent months that ‘My ways and thoughts are not your ways and thoughts.’ (Psalm 116:12)”

Meet – and pray for:

Gavin Dickson

Gavin is an evangelist with SASRA, The Soldiers & Airmen’s Scripture Readers Association. He has successfully completed our new Advanced Ministry Apprenticeship Programme (AMAP), graduating with a Licentiate in Theology (with Distinction). AMAP is a 9 month vocational training programme, conducted in diverse ministry settings under the leadership of EBC and external mentors.  (More details here)

Gavin writes, “Having moved from Germany to Edinburgh, I wished to continue studying theology. I was made aware of the AMAP course at Edinburgh Bible College and, noticing that this would meet requirements as Continual Personal Development (CPD) and being told that SASRA would fund most of the course, I jumped at the chance to study the Bible and develop skills and gifting in ministry.

“The program is primarily designed for those going into full time ministry and focused on those being called into the pastorate. However, the course is adaptable and as someone already in full time ministry as an Evangelist with SASRA the programme has been beneficial and has challenged me in some deep areas.

“The work with Heather Holdsworth on Spiritual Formation has been especially challenging. Delving into the whys of my personal life and going deeper into issues both realised and potential. For example, we did a lot of work looking at ‘blind spots’ and ‘weakness’ that might hinder or at worst destroy ministry.

“The AMAP course has helped further develop my ministry philosophy as well as helped in planning and resourcing ministry projects. My hope is that the knowledge and skills will help me reach more soldiers and airmen with the Good News of the Kingdom of God.”

Blended learning @ EBC

Since EBC was established in 2012 two of our key priorities have been accessibility and flexibility. We are keen to make our training available to as many people as possible and in ways that are appropriate for people’s varied circumstances and commitments. We have always made most of our teaching available to distance learning students, and some of them have combined online modules with attendance at a few classes on campus.

We now want to take this a step further with our new Blended Learning initiative. This will make our full mentored and practical training for ministry accessible to some who, for various reasons, are not in a position to physically attend College every week but who could combine learning from home through personal study and online virtual classrooms with some modules taken on campus.

We are rolling this out in the new College year, starting at the end of September 2020, and are in discussion with two or three potential students who want to take advantage of this opportunity.

If you would like to explore this possibility, either for this autumn or for some time in the future, why not get in touch – info@edinburghbiblecollege.co.uk – and we would be more than happy to chat with you.
